According to the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, the United Nations has designated June 20 each year as World Refugee Day to commemorate refugees from all over the world. Hope to raise the global public’s awareness of refugee issues and thereby protect the fundamental human rights of refugees and help displaced people find safe and happy homes.

Washington, D.C. (Merxwire) – Did you know that 20 people lose their country every minute to avoid war or terror? As of May this year, more than 100 million people have been displaced worldwide. On June 20, World Refugee Day, this year’s theme is the right to seek safety. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) calls on all walks of life to lend a helping hand and give more support to refugees.

According to the UNHCR 2021 Global Trends report, the number of people forcibly displaced by war, violence, and persecution stood at 89.3 million by the end of 2021, an eight percent increase from the previous year and more than double the number a decade ago. It includes 27.1 million refugees, 53 million internally displaced persons, 4.6 million asylum seekers, and 4.4 million Venezuelans displaced abroad.

The Russian-Ukrainian conflict broke out this year, triggering the fastest-spreading and largest refugee crisis since World War II. In addition, other emergencies in Africa, Afghanistan, and other places have also led to a sharp rise in the number of refugees worldwide, breaking the 100 million mark for the first time. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, called on the international community to unite and act to deal with disasters, defuse conflicts, and seek practical solutions.

The number of refugees has been growing over the past decade and this year reached its highest point on record. But we don’t need to be pessimistic because of this. The good news is that in 2021, a total of 81,200 refugees will obtain nationality and obtain citizenship, the most significant decrease in the number of stateless people since 2014.
