(Photo via MERXWIRE) TOKYO, JAPAN (MERXWIRE) – The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan announced that the total amount of donations received through the “Furusato Tax” system exceeded 1.27 trillion yen in fiscal year 2024, setting a new record. Takarazuka City in Hyogo Prefecture topped the list with 25.668 billion yen, with approximately 25.4 billion yen coming from two large donations to the municipal hospital. Seafood, meat, rice, and fruit remained the most popular rewards. Many local governments also offered attractive reward programs. In November 2025, Japan’s largest “Furusato Selection Thanksgiving Festival” will be held in Yokohama to promote regional charm and strengthen connections between donors and local communities. In the ranking of donation amounts by local governments, Takarazuka City in Hyogo Prefecture took first place for the first time with 25.668 billion yen. Notably, approximately 25.4 billion yen of this total came from two large donations to the municipal hospital. Following Takarazuka were Shiranuka-cho, Hokkaido (21.165 billion yen), Izumisano City, Osaka Prefecture (18.152 billion yen), Miyakonojo City, Miyazaki Prefecture (17.692 billion yen), and Beppu-cho, Hokkaido (17.350 billion yen). Since its implementation in 2008, the Furusato Tax system has become increasingly popular because residents can choose which local government to support, receive a tax deduction on their income tax the following year, and most local governments offer local specialties as rewards. Seafood, meat, rice, and fruit remain the most popular rewards. To attract more supporters, local governments are constantly innovating their reward programs. For example, Kitami City in Hokkaido offers a high-value reward program, allowing donors to receive the right to use a vacation house for donations up to 300 million yen—one of the most attractive programs nationwide. To further promote regional charm, TrustBank Co., Ltd. will hold Japan’s largest “Furusato Selection Thanksgiving Festival” at the Pacifico Yokohama on November 8-9, 2025. The event will feature 164 local governments and residents from across Japan, offering food tastings, experiences, and craft displays to showcase the unique characteristics and charm of each region. Now in its 11th year, this event aims to foster interaction between donors and the local community, allowing participants to appreciate not only the value of the thank-you gifts but also understand how their donations are used, thereby strengthening the emotional bond between them. The organizers stated that they hope to utilize this opportunity to cultivate long-term partnerships that support local development.
